Dr. Glenn R. "Doc" Young
Firearms Instructor — US Army Veteran · Federal Law Enforcement Retiree
Doc Young was born in Texas and grew up in Arlington. After graduating high school, he joined the US Army in 1975, training as an infantryman and earning assignment to the prestigious Berlin Brigade — the US forward force stationed in West Berlin during the Cold War.
While serving in Berlin, Doc qualified for and was selected to attend Officer Candidate School. He completed subsequent officer assignments in Alabama and Germany before receiving an honorable discharge as a Captain in 1982 — a rank reflecting seven years of demonstrated leadership under real military conditions.
Committed to continuing education, Dr. Young earned his bachelor's degree from Columbia College in 1986 and his doctorate in psychology from the Forest Institute of Professional Psychology in 1992. He then built a distinguished 20+ year career with the Federal Bureau of Prisons, retiring on December 31, 2012. His federal career combined firearms proficiency, behavioral expertise, and institutional training responsibility at the highest levels.
After retiring, Doc completed NRA instructor certification and qualified as a Texas License to Carry (LTC) instructor — bringing the discipline of a military officer, the rigor of federal law enforcement, and the patience of a lifelong educator to every class he teaches at Dragon Firearm Training in South Padre Island.
His courses are trusted by first-time shooters, women seeking self-defense skills, parents wanting to handle firearms safely at home, and experienced shooters looking to formalize their training. When you train with Doc Young, you're learning from someone who has carried, taught, and lived firearms safety for five decades.
